  报告摘要:

The worldwide jet fuel consumption is about 5.3 Mbbl/day, all of which are being produced from petroleum. This is not sustainable in terms of jet fuel feedstock supply chain management and carbon emission. Among the many alternative pathways that are being investigated to replace the petroleum–based jet fuels, the biomass-based approach looks the most promising in the near term. The US Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, has recently announced a notice of availability of funding for financial assistance from the Bioenergy Technologies Office. One of the areas to be supported is to develop technologies for producing drop-in renewable jet fuels at a cost of $3/gallon of gasoline equivalent (GGE). Arizona State University is leading a R&D effort to develop a biomass-based technology for drop-in renewable jet fuel production. Our main approach is to produce bio-crude oil from both Salicornia and algae in a hydrothermal liquefaction process and then upgrade the bio-crude oil to jet fuel blendstocks. Both life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) will be carried out to ensure the environmental and economic viability of the new technology. The technical approach on drop-in renewable jet fuel production in our project will be discussed in detail.

Arizona State University (ASU) is heavily involved in the DOE-sponsored algal biofuel programs in the past decades. Many algal species are being cultivated in the testbeds located in the Polytechnic campus of ASU for both wastewater water treatment and biofuels and bioproducts production. Deng’s lab is responsible for processing the algal biomass to biofuels and bioproducts with hydrothermal liquefaction, supercritical methanol or ethanol technologies. Value-added products including polyunsaturated fatty acids, nitrogen-doped porous carbons are being developed in Deng’s lab in addition to algal biofuels. The porous carbons can be used as adsorbents for water treatment, carbon capture and also as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage in batteries and supercapacitors. ASU will continue research endeavours in energy, environment and food nexus.
